thrift store button art

April 5th, 2011

found this the other day. i was pretty thrilled, it’s kind of perfect…

it must’ve been a kit, you can see the placement printing on the felt under the buttons. it reminds me a little of these.

and it was 30% off the already perfect price.

huh?

March 30th, 2011

this is officially the weirdest themed fabric i ever found at a thrift store.

and the fact that’s a a knit makes it even more odd for some reason. what would you make out of it?

i might postpone my website update til next week, i just got a bright idea for a couple of other things i’d like to add, but i have to whip them up first. also i’m adding a bunch of new pictures to my ‘happy customers’ pages, if you have a picture you’d like to send me, please do! and for those of you that have kindly sent me pictures in the past year, thank you! they’ll be up soon!

happy spring!

painted clothespins

January 31st, 2011

hi there! it’s been a while!

i saw these cuties online and had to make some…

spray painted, then handpainted and clear coated.

now, before you start to question my sanity, let me tell you i already did that when i started to paint clothespins (clothespins? for crying out loud, what am i doing? i don’t have the time for this!!) but then i figured, i use them all the time and they look really pretty, so why the heck not? i had a tiny bit of spraypaint left over from a patio chair project, so the clothespins were a perfect way to use up the last few drops in the can. it really didn’t take much time to paint them. i didn’t think hanging out the laundry could be any more fun than it already is! (imagine how cute they look in a dirndl clothespin bag!!)

in my typical obsessive fashion, i painted more clothespins than i really need. yeah, i painted 100 of them…so i’m giving the bunch in the photo away. (if you’d like them, leave a comment and i’ll pick a name tomorrow morning.)

i kept my design fairly simple because i’m not good at decorative painting, but i want to do more of it. i would love to paint something like this bench one day. recently i bought myself this book on tole painting. i like the ‘heritage crafts today’ series, i also have the hex sign painting book from the series, and a couple of others still on my wishlist.

and another toadstool project

October 28th, 2010

with all the sewing that goes on around here, i end up with alot of empty plastic cone spools. i think there must be something i can make with them so i can’t throw them away. it seemed pretty obvious that they would make great toadstool stems…so with some styrofoam balls, a glue gun and some rug yarn i made these yarn wrapped toadstool decorations.

3 inch balls seem to be the perfect toadstool-top size. slice them in half and gently press the spool into the center of the cut side about a half inch deep. remove the spool, add a bead of glue and replace.

make a loop at the end of yarn and tie a knot. glue to the center of the styrofoam top.

start wrapping yarn around top, gluing as you go.

when you get to the bottom of the cap, switch to the stem color and keep wrapping and gluing…

and gluing and wrapping…

when you get to the bottom of the spool, tuck the end of the yarn inside and glue a circle of cardstock on to finish off the bottom.

want spots on it? i used tiny pom poms because i love pom poms, but tiny buttons or beads would make nice spots too. finished size is about 5 1/2″ tall.

some sweaters i’m going to knit

crocheted cross stitch

September 23rd, 2010

one of the projects from that stack of 70’s craft books i picked up at the thrift store this summer is traditional cross stitch patterns interpreted in crochet. i just finished this…

i really like this idea. it’s pretty big, 14″x17″. the stitch is a little cluster that make neat little squares, it would really work for any type of pattern on a grid.

i was looking through ‘charted peasant designs from saxon transylvania’ for another pattern to try this way. lots of good stuff. i think i might try this one…

and look who i spotted on this page

it’s those same birds!
