i’m in love with this skirt. if it were my size i would buy it in a heartbeat, even though i’m not allowed to buy skirts.

would you wear burlap?

i would love to try printing on it, just look at how cute this vintage fabric is…

glorious ginghams

January 26th, 2012

what is your favorite size gingham for clothing?

i’m working on some spring and summer stuff and one of the new things i want to make uses gingham.

i want to know what is your favorite size gingham to wear?

1/4″ used to be my fave, but i surprised myself by favoring the 1/8″ this time around.

during my extensive online gingham ‘research’ last night, somehow i ended up on youtube watching Animals videos for hours on end. isn’t it funny how the internet works? one of them featured them wearing these cute gingham suits…

okay, i know technically they’re houndstooth, gingham’s woolly cousin, but the spacing just looks so gingham-y. you can see the suits in action here.

here they go again

January 24th, 2012

i had a rude awakening at the post office yesterday…they raised the rates again.

the biggest increase was in international overseas shipping, with a $3 increase in the priority mail flat rate price, and variable weight increased accordingly. ouch. our neighbors north of the border only got a slight increase of a dollar on the flat rate, a little more on the variable weight.

so for my international friends and customers, i’m sticking with the old shipping prices until the end of the week. if there’s something you’ve had your eye on, consider ordering it now, next week the shipping prices will go up about $3 per item.

UPDATE 2/1 – i’m going to try sending things registered first class mail, that should work out to be about the same price as the old shipping prices though it may take a little longer. i’ll test it out for a month or two and see how it goes. the new priority mail rates are out of control!

truly beautiful clothes

December 31st, 2011

never go out of fashion

i found this at a junk shop on a cross country road trip almost 20 years ago, it’s been hanging in my various workrooms since then. the artwork really amuses me. it was a nino cerruti ad in a 1979 issue of W.

here’s to making truly beautiful clothes in 2012!

jumbo sized flower loom flowers

December 20th, 2011

perusing the aisles of the 99cent store the other day, i saw these packages of brightly colored polyethelene rope.

my first thought was that it looked and felt like jumbo sized plastic raffia. my second thought was how awesome would it be to make jumbo sized flower loom flowers with this stuff? totally awesome!!

i wondered how i could make a giant flower loom, then i remembered socorro’s set of knifty knitters. the yellow one is the biggest at 11″ across, which is just about the perfect size to accomodate the plastic rope. i followed the basic flower loom instructions, and used every other peg to wrap the rope around.

jumbo sized flower loom flowers=jumbo sized fun!!!

i can fit three of them into a big envelope, want them? leave a comment and my little helper will pick a recipient a week from today.

hungarian honeycake overload

December 13th, 2011

i had to do it, i couldn’t stop myself…

honeycake chair!

i probably could have stopped myself from making the gingerbread one, but i did it anyways…

making the chairs reminded me of this little box i found, and i saw some coordinating items on etsy that i find pretty irresistable, like these shot glasses

and this matching flask, to fill them up.

then i almost died when i discovered this wonderful shop on etsy recently…

there are so many pretty handpainted necklaces to choose from, i have my eye on a few others.

i was also reminded of how much i love the cover of
this book
, in all it’s honeycake-ish glory (i have a copy of it hanging above my sewing machine). so pretty!

and if that’s not enough for you, take a peek at a few of my faves on flickr here, here and here. and don’t forget these two felt projects from last year and a few years ago.

kissin’ kritters kabin ornament

December 7th, 2011

a few months ago, nynke asked me to make some art to be printed on the back of a flyer for a holiday craft fair in the Netherlands. we talked about making an ornament, so i made a kissin’ kritters ornament using the elements from my kissin’ kritters skirt print. want to make one yourself?

download the PDF here in red or here in black!

print it out on 8.5×11 cardstock, then all you have to do is cut, fold and glue! (i recommend using a glue gun so the glue dries fast)

add a string under the roof before you glue it on if you want to hang it, or you can fill it up with little treats before you glue up the last side for cute party favors!

finished size is about 3x3x2.5

(and you can still download the knick knack gift cards from a few years ago here)
