world’s largest ric rac!

May 15th, 2009

okay, i don’t know if there’s any truth to that claim, but it sure is the biggest ric rac i’ve ever seen…

world's largest ric rac!

i found this a long time ago (almost two decades!) stuffed in a bag of assorted trim at the thrift store. it was pretty thrilling! i made a red velvet dress way back when and used some of it on the hem, the remaining piece i have hanging above my sewing machine so i can look at it all the time. it’s made from some kind of woolly feeling yarn. oh, how i would love to have yards and yards of this!

vintage husqvarna!

i picked up this beauty at the thrift store a few days ago for under twenty dollars. when i opened up the case i knew i couldn’t leave the store without it (i like to think i know a good thing when i see it!) i use my trusty old industrial singer & merrow machines for all of my sewing, but i still use a home machine when i need a little zig-zag action for sewing on appliques. this one will be taking over that job from now on!

look how cute it is all tucked in bed!

it’s things like this that make rummaging through so much thrift store crap seem all worthwhile.

apple pickin’ apron

April 28th, 2009

while i was digging through my drawer of tea towels a while ago to find one for my tea towel rug, i found this cute apron which i’d totally forgotten about. i don’t even remember where i picked it up, but i was glad to find it. it looks really cute on…

then i noticed it has buttons on the sides, i thought maybe you buttoned it up on the sides to carry your freshly picked veggies in from the garden…

fresh veggies!

then i discovered it’s actually an apron bonnet!

apron bonnet!

oh wait, i think i have it on inside out…

here’s an old-timey apron bonnet pattern to make one yourself! what will they think of next?

no place like here

April 22nd, 2009

have you been watching the new ‘there’s no place like here’ series of videos on etsy? if you’re nosey like me and like to see inside other peoples’ homes, they’re fun to watch! guess whose house is featured today! i apologize for all of my nervous giggling and mumbling.

stuffed mushrooms and escargot

April 9th, 2009

 stuffed mushrooms and escargot

i made this while procrastinating…like i need another mushroom-y thing around the house! i was thinking how nice a toadstool pillow would look nestled with the log pillows on the sofa. i made this using the pattern from my toadstool doorstops. i enlarged it 150% and took in the top of the stem a little bit before sewing it to the cap. it’s about 14″ high and 9″ wide. i stuffed it with leftover scraps from making skirts. skirts i should have been sewing instead of making this.

sprucing up a sweater

March 29th, 2009

i was going through some sweaters that i haven’t worn lately and pulled out this cute norwegian sweater. i found it at the thrift store over a year ago, and though i’ve pulled it out a few times to wear, i’ve never actually worn it. i don’t really know why, because i like the pattern, color and fit.

i had these pieces of embroidered felt left over from another project and i thought they would look really cute appliqued onto the front…

spruced-up sweater!

i think i just turned it into my new favorite sweater! now it should see some heavy rotation in the wardrobe.
