vintage screen printed sweaters

i’ve always loved these vintage screen printed sweaters

they used to be all over the thrift stores back when i was in high school, and when i first learned how to screen print i would marvel over how they were screen printed in one piece and then sewn up the sides and underarm.

i still find them now and then. i just picked up this one, it looks like it’s never even been worn…

ps- i forgot to mention there are a few new limited edition skirts on my website, and i made a scherenschnitte print dish cloth!

twins!

you won’t believe what i found at the junkyard last weekend. i saw the beat up case peeking out and i knew right away…

well, it wasn’t actually in the junkyard, but in the junkyard parking lot there’s a little thrift store which i have never seen open until that day. it was also 1/2 price weekend! you might remember how excited i was to find this baby. it’s twin was marked at $15 so it ended up being only $7.50! i couldn’t believe my luck!

i’d been stalking the cams for the first one on ebay but on the rare occasions they appear they always end up being too expensive for me. this baby had them all, and all the different feet!

it even had the manual and original advertising brochure!

so excited!!

the machine doesn’t run as smooth as the first one, but the motor sounds strong. with a little cleaning and a lube job it should be good as new!

world’s largest ric rac!

okay, i don’t know if there’s any truth to that claim, but it sure is the biggest ric rac i’ve ever seen…

world's largest ric rac!

i found this a long time ago (almost two decades!) stuffed in a bag of assorted trim at the thrift store. it was pretty thrilling! i made a red velvet dress way back when and used some of it on the hem, the remaining piece i have hanging above my sewing machine so i can look at it all the time. it’s made from some kind of woolly feeling yarn. oh, how i would love to have yards and yards of this!

vintage husqvarna!

i picked up this beauty at the thrift store a few days ago for under twenty dollars. when i opened up the case i knew i couldn’t leave the store without it (i like to think i know a good thing when i see it!) i use my trusty old industrial singer & merrow machines for all of my sewing, but i still use a home machine when i need a little zig-zag action for sewing on appliques. this one will be taking over that job from now on!

vintage husqvarna all tucked in bed!

look how cute it is all tucked in bed!

it’s things like this that make rummaging through so much thrift store crap seem all worthwhile.

apple pickin’ apron

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

while i was digging through my drawer of tea towels a while ago to find one for my tea towel rug, i found this cute apron which i’d totally forgotten about. i don’t even remember where i picked it up, but i was glad to find it. it looks really cute on…

then i noticed it has buttons on the sides, i thought maybe you buttoned it up on the sides to carry your freshly picked veggies in from the garden…

fresh veggies!

then i discovered it’s actually an apron bonnet!

apron bonnet!

oh wait, i think i have it on inside out…

here’s an old-timey apron bonnet pattern to make one yourself! what will they think of next?

thrift store cuties

i found these little ladies at the thrift store this weekend. i was pretty thrilled! they look like they would be fun to try and make. the bottom is 1 1/4″ tall and the head is about 7/8″. they are from denmark.
