fun russian handicrafts

i went to the thrift store yesterday and they had a bunch of cute russian clay figurines called dymkovo toys. i had never seen this type of handicraft before. i bought these two, the brown bears are my favorite…

european brown bear family!

over the river and through the woods...

then i thought about the other ones all night and had to go back this morning and get a few more. colorful farmyard fun!

farmyard fun!

the girl in the middle has a birdbath full of birds!

they are made from a mixture of clay and sand, then after they are dried they are whitewashed with chalk diluted in milk and painted with tempera. the final touch is gold leaf accents. festive!

I’ve never seen this type of work before. How very interesting! My town has a large russian population; I’ll have to keep my eyes out for similar work.
