I’m excited to see what you come up with! “Burlap jacket” has sprung into many different directions in my mind, so we’ll see what happens if I ever have time for it.

I’ve never tried the washing thing myself, but maybe I’ll throw a swatch in with my next load to put my money where my mouth is. I work at a fabric store and that’s what we’ve been told, and have passed it onto many customers.

thanks for the triple washing tip, julianne! i might try printing on it for pillows, now you’ve given me something to think about! i love the way the bright ink looks on all that texture.

First of course it needs to be pre-washed. Supposedly three times in the washing machine will make a huge difference. I’ve never used burlap for clothing but I’ve made pillows out of it, and the burlap, like any other-loose weave fabric, has to be lined! The lining holds the structure of the piece, and the burlap is decorative, more like lace.

I think a burlap blazer would be pretty chic. The burlap would need to be applied to a base fabric, like an interlining (but there would still need to be an actual lining). Now you’ve given me something to think about…

Super cute. Worth the itch factor? I’m not sure, but maybe. Wear only with tights, perhaps.

yeah, would probably make for same nasty heat rash. it seems like it would be hard to sew with too, since the weave is all loosey goosey. this skirt looks pretty fancy but i was wondering why it didn’t have a lining with such a coarse material.

i made a hot pink burlap skirt once, and it was a disaster. it itched for one. horrible itching.
